5 Bands from The South You Should Check Out

Whaleboat

Whaleboat is power pop rock foursome haling from the city of Savannah, GA. Full of cleverly crafted hooks, giant builds, nostalgic lyrics and an overall sound big enough to rival any of the arena rock greats such as U2 or Coldplay. They took nearly all of 2013 off to get their barrings as life and full time jobs can get a bit overwhelming. But as with anything worth doing, you must stick with it and see through until there is nothing left to see. Enjoy this tune below off their latest record Convoys.

Baby Baby

Can't sum these guys up very well with any particular sub-genre rock'n roll tag. Their music is loud and makes you want to rock out in your office chair, but it's not metal or screamo or anything lame or angry. It's entirely about having a good time and making people dance and making squares uncomfortable. These guys are from Carrollton, GA. They recently graced the cover of Performer Magazine

Elim Bolt

Extremely well written songs that vary in style widely sometimes, Elim Bolt is a Charleston gem. Lead singer and guitarist Johnnie Matthews has an intricate and plain way of painting pictures with words. Their music ranges from indie-pop to garage punk to stripped down psychedelic lonely western cowboy tunes.

Enjoy the video below for their tune Dingy. The way it starts sounds like a couple of Band of Horses tunes, but it doesn't take long for Elim Bolt to take it in a direction all their own.

Generationals

Formed in 2008 and taking their name from CNN's coverage of the presidential campaign and its repetitive way of referring to every issue as "Generational", Generationals is a band from New Orleans who has not only had their music featured in a Bloomingdale's commercial, but in a Reese's Peanut butter cup commercial and in the opening credits for a feature film starring Drew Barrymore, too. Their music is a mishmash of surfer-electro- indie-pop and their sound is not unlike Yeasayer or Phoenix, but there version on this style is noticeably less introverted and comes with more balls and would go well at any drunken French Quarter parlour party.

Wrinkle Neck Mules

Wrinkle Neck Mules formed in Richmond, VA and they've been banging out hard-scrabble roots country for some 15 years now about everything from getting the hell out of Chattanooga to missing old moonshiner relatives. They have limited touring schedule because not all of their members live in VA, but that doesn't mean they rock the house when they do get together. Their song Central Daylight was featured in a Geico commercial and they've also had music featured on the now defunct ESPN Outdoors.
