Fall 2016 Light Jackets

In the South, we're lucky to not have to deal with bitter cold, usually, 'til 'round January. Unless you live up on top of a mountain, you don't need a heavy coat for the latter part of the year. Below are just a few ideas to keep the crisp autumn breeze from making it's way completely to your bones and, ideally, making you look good at the same time.

SOUTHERN TIDE - Maritime Jacket

Southern Tide was started by a native Southerner who saw a gap in the marketplace for Southern Style. They're based out of Greenville, South Carolina. In the tradition of fifteenth century sailors, this wax coated cotton jacket has a corduroy collar and hound's-tooth cotton interior to keep you dry, and warm. And the navy blue color will go great with 'most everything, except maybe black slacks.

Southern Tide - Altitude Down Vest

Another classy vesture by Southern Tide--Can't go wrong with this light Down-Filled vest over a nice flannel while attending a football game or an rambling through a corn maze. I might suggest a big less typical flannel though - perhaps this one or this one? It even has zippered hand warmer pockets and elastic cuffs to keep in heat.

GAP - ColdControl Lite Stretch Colorblock Puffer Jacket

Modernly masculine and straight to the point. The Colorblock Puffer Jacket is made with quilted stretch weave with contrast lining to keep you extra comfortable and free to move about. The zippered front with a storm flap will keep out the wind and keep you nice and toasty no doubt on a hike up a mountain with the chick you just matched with on Bumble, if she ever sends you a message.

Men's Fall/Winter Fashion

Though the leaves are in a display of vibrant colors many days this time of year are crisp and grey and you're going to want to dress to match these earthy hues of Autumn in The South.

Flannel and plaid don't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon and looks that originated in the 70s are alive and well.

All Saints

I've never been one that was too into the flat bottom shirts, but this one works well with various casual settings. I'm not sure about most people, but I actually keep stuff in my shirt pockets all the time-and this flannel has 2; perfect for keeping a valet ticket in one, lighter in the other. This shirt is nearly $200, but there are countless comparable ones like it for much more reasonable prices out there. Albeit the quality might be as high, but I've certainly been disappointed by expensive name brands, too.

Bridge and Burn
Haymakers & Company, Nashville TN

This flannel, lined overshirt is sure to keep you warm enough so that you might be able to leave the jacket at home this winter, but you won't be sweltering when you're inside at the annual holiday party.

An ever-evolving boutique in a bungalow in Nashville's Midtown/Vanderbilt neighborhood, Haymakers & Company partners with local artists and companies to create a truly unique shopping experience complete with free drinks -if you so desire- and even a barber if you need a shave or haircut.

Billy Reid
Florence, Alabama

Subtle and understated, and Made in the USA of 100% cotton by Florence designer Billy Reid, this classically demure Clancy Shirt will go great with just about anything. The buttons are made of bone and the pocket flaps are hidden by flaps themselves. One can find a Billy Reid store in Atlanta, New York, Houston, Dallas, New Orleans and many other distinguished cities across the Southeast, and the United States.

I tend to think of it as a high-end, exclusive J. Crew.

This designer shirt is, of course, top-notch quality, but if your budget, like mine, isn't quite up to par with such a price point a comparable shirt can be found here.

Ralph Lauren
 Labrada Double-Breasted Wool Blend Peacoat

A coat like this is very much an essential to any Southern Gentleman's winter wardrobe for the when he needs to project an air of sophistication, but, of course, needs to keep his self warm. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes and is available at an upscale, nationwide department store at a very reasonable price.

Schott Bros.
Wool Slim Peacoat

Cut a bit differently to fit more snugly, made in America, but significantly more expensive than the jacket above, that is probably made in Asia somewhere, this jacket can be found across the Southeast at many fine retailers. Like the gentleman in the picture, wear it with some dark blue trousers and probably even some black boots. Schott is based out of New York City and their products can even be found at Army Surplus Stores.

Autumn Essentials: Boots

Winter is going to be hanging around for a couple more months. A man's feet must stay warm and his footing must be secure. Here are a few ideas...

Bed Stu Hoover Shoe

Pair these throwback kicks with some dingy old black jeans or some dark blue or grey denims and charcoal chambray button-up and you've got yourself and outfit, good sir. Perfect for a Friday night out at your local watering hole.
